A modest university lecturer strikes up a close friendship with a talented student. During walks and in letters, they discuss poetry and God (both share a hobby of volunteering at the church), and the young man even helps in getting the lecturer's ancient manuscript published. At some point, they move in together. Unfortunately, everything is overshadowed by the lecturer's failing health: he is plagued by hallucinations and struggles to get out of bed. After a few months, he barely survives a hospital stay, only to die from alcohol poisoning. A year later, the story repeats itself in detail - the charming young volunteer, poetry, God, cohabitation, sudden death - with an elderly woman living on the same street.
